Industrial 3D scanning services
Equipment, piping, structures and enclosures
Our home market is the Houston Ship Channel: refineries, chemical plants, terminals, fabrication shops, and module yards where a handheld scanner earns its keep on corroded pipe, worn pump parts, skids that must bolt to existing foundations, and failures that have to be documented before the crane moves. The same crew scans rebar before a pour on a data center slab and a cracked beam for an insurance adjuster the next day.
The scanner is wireless, carries its own processor and screen, and needs no targets, tripod, or site power. That is why it can go where a terrestrial laser scanner cannot — under a skid, inside a vault, around a nozzle — and why the capture is checked on site rather than discovered incomplete back at the office.
What a handheld scanner is for — and what it is not
- Objects and assemblies from a hand tool to a 40-foot container unit, scanned in overlapping zones
- Full color at 0.2 mm resolution: labels, cracks, pitting, weld profiles, mill marks
- Undersides, interiors, and compound curves a tripod scanner cannot see
- Not a replacement for terrestrial laser scanning of whole buildings or sites — we register into those projects instead
- Not a through-wall measurement: corrosion scans report external loss and are paired with ultrasonic thickness
Deliverables
3D scanning deliverables: point cloud, mesh, CAD and reports
Every deliverable states the scan accuracy achieved on that job, the alignment or drift control used, and the formats it was exported in.
| Deliverable | Formats | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Color mesh | STL, OBJ, PLY, WRL | Visual record, 3D printing, VR and AR assets, forensic exhibits |
| Point cloud | E57, PTX, ASC, XYZRGB | Registration into laser-scanning and BIM projects, as-builts |
| CAD solid | STEP, IGES, Parasolid (X_T) | Reverse engineering, manufacturing quotes, fit-up checks |
| Deviation report | PDF, interactive 3D report, CSV | Scan vs drawing or CAD: color map, pass/fail table, call-outs |
| Measurement report | CSV, DXF, PDF reports | Crack maps, pit depths, anchor bolt coordinates, embed schedules |
| Drawings and models | DWG, PDF, Revit, STEP | As-built documentation of modular units, skids, and existing conditions |
Pricing basis
3D scanning service cost: what drives the quote
Time on site
Most single objects and pre-pour areas are a half-day; a module, skid, tank floor, or failure site is a day. Live plants and secured sites add permit and escort time, which the quote names.
Processing and modeling
A cleaned mesh is quick. A deviation report against drawings, a parametric CAD solid, a crack map, or a Revit model takes modeling hours, priced by the deliverable you order.
Travel
From the nearest of our 27 regional hubs. Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio are a drive from Sugar Land; most other metros are a drive from a hub rather than a flight.
Send photos, rough dimensions, and the deliverable you need through the quote form and we return a written quote. Engineering firms and surveyors can ask for the day-rate sheet.
Coverage
3D scanning services in Houston, Texas and 27 US hubs
Scanning crews are dispatched from our Sugar Land, Texas headquarters across the Houston metro and the Gulf Coast plants, and staffed through regional hubs for projects elsewhere. The scanner travels as carry-on luggage, so remote fabrication yards and plants are a flight, not a logistics problem.

FAQ
3D scanning services FAQ
How much does 3D scanning cost?
Three things set the price: time on site to capture (most single objects or pre-pour areas are a half-day; a module, skid, or failure site is usually a full day), processing hours for the deliverable you order (a cleaned mesh is quick; parametric CAD or a deviation report against drawings takes longer), and travel from the nearest of our 27 hubs. Send photos, rough dimensions, and the deliverable you need and we return a written quote. Day-rate scanning for engineering firms and surveyors is quoted as a flat daily rate plus processing.
How accurate is handheld 3D scanning?
The Artec Leo we use is rated by its manufacturer at 3D point accuracy up to 0.1 mm and 3D resolution up to 0.2 mm, with accuracy over distance of 0.1 mm + 0.3 mm/m. On a 2 m object that is sub-millimeter; across a 12 m module we control drift with a tape-measure backbone and overlapping scan zones, and we state the achieved accuracy on every report rather than quoting a brochure number.
What size objects can you scan?
The Leo is built for objects from roughly 20 cm up to about 2 m — anchor bolt clusters, pump parts, impellers, failed connections, pipe spools, precast panels, skids. Larger assemblies and container-size units are scanned in overlapping zones with reference points so the pieces register into one model. Whole buildings and sitewide topography are terrestrial laser scanner or drone work; we do not sell that, and we will say so when it is what you need.
Do you come on site, or do we ship the part?
Both. Field scanning is the point of a handheld scanner: we scan rebar mats, failures, piping, and equipment where they sit, including live plants with the right permits. Parts that can be moved can be shipped or dropped at our Sugar Land, Texas office and scanned there.
What file formats do you deliver?
Meshes as STL, OBJ (with texture), PLY, or WRL; point clouds as E57, PTX, ASC, or XYZRGB for registration into your laser-scanning project; CAD as STEP, IGES, or Parasolid; measurements and deviation reports as PDF, CSV, and DXF. Tell us what software opens on your end and we export for it.
Can you scan shiny, dark, or wet surfaces?
Bare machined steel, black rubber, wet concrete, and glass are the hard cases for any structured-light scanner. We handle them with a removable scanning spray or powder where the surface allows it, by scanning at the angles the material tolerates, and by telling you in the quote when a surface will need treatment so there are no surprises on site.
Who owns the scan data, and will you sign an NDA?
You do. Raw scans, processed meshes, and CAD are delivered to you and retained in our files only for your reorders unless you ask us to purge them. NDAs are signed before mobilization, and we work under client site-safety and security programs in plants and secure facilities.
How is this different from the laser scanning a survey company offers?
A terrestrial laser scanner stands on a tripod and captures rooms and sites at millimeter-to-centimeter accuracy. A handheld structured-light scanner captures objects at a tenth of a millimeter with full color, from every angle, including undersides and inside openings. Survey and laser-scanning firms subcontract us for exactly that detail work; our handheld scanning page explains the arrangement.
