Pre-Pour 3D Scanning of Rebar, Embeds and Anchor Bolts
Before the concrete goes in, we scan the reinforcing mat, embed plates, anchor bolts, sleeves and post-tension layout and deliver a permanent 3D record of what is about to be buried — checked against the structural drawings and attached to the special inspection report. It is the one piece of pre-pour documentation that still answers questions ten years later.

What a pre-pour scan captures: rebar mat, embeds, anchor bolts, PT and sleeves
A pre-pour scan is a handheld 3D capture of everything inside the forms in the hours before placement: bar size and spacing, lap splices, cover to the form face and to the subgrade, embed plates and their studs, anchor bolt clusters, sleeves and blockouts, conduit, post-tension tendon profiles and anchorages. The scanner records geometry and full color at the same time, so the model shows the tie wire, the chair, and the mill mark — not a gray approximation.
The result is a single registered model of the placement area that can be measured in any direction later. Where a photo shows that a sleeve existed, the scan shows where it is to a few millimeters, which is what the mechanical contractor needs when they core through the slab two years from now.
Rebar placement verification against structural drawings — spacing, cover, lap splices
We overlay the scan on the structural drawings or the rebar shop drawings and report what is out of tolerance: spacing that drifted, cover that closed up where the mat sagged, laps that came up short, bars that were left out at a corner. ACI 117 sets placing tolerances for cover and spacing; the overlay turns those tolerances into a color map the superintendent can walk to and fix before the trucks arrive.
For reinforcing steel special inspection under IBC Chapter 17 the scan does not replace the inspector — it gives the inspector a measured record to sign against and the engineer of record a model to resolve questions on without a site visit.
Anchor bolt as-built survey before steel delivery
Anchor bolt patterns are the most expensive thing to get wrong at a pre-pour. We scan each cluster and template, extract the bolt centers, projection, and plumb, and report them against the anchor bolt setting plan as a drawing plus a coordinate spreadsheet. A second scan after the pour documents any movement during placement, so the erector gets a verified as-built pattern before columns ship instead of discovering a misplaced bolt with a crane on the clock.
Embed verification and pre-pour documentation as the owner's permanent record
Embed plates, weld plates, and curb angles are easy to verify in the scan and nearly impossible to verify after the pour. Each embed is located, its orientation and projection measured, and the record attached to the daily report. Owners use the same model for the life of the structure: locating sleeves before a core, confirming reinforcing before a change of occupancy, or settling a dispute about what was installed.
3D rebar scanning before the pour versus GPR rebar scanning services after it
Most search results for rebar scanning are ground-penetrating radar: locating bars inside hardened concrete before someone drills. GPR is the right tool after the pour and we schedule it through our materials testing group. A pre-pour 3D scan is the better record of the two because it sees the actual bars, sizes, and embeds rather than inferring them, and it costs a fraction of a GPR survey across a whole slab. If the pour already happened, GPR is what you need; if it has not, scan first.
Deliverables and turnaround: point cloud, deviation report, as-built record
Capture on a typical elevated slab bay or spread footing takes an hour or two and fits between the inspector's walk and the pour. Processing is done the same day for the as-built record and the next business day for a full deviation overlay, with a rush path when the pour is the next morning. Files are delivered as a color mesh, a point cloud for your BIM team, a PDF report with measured call-outs, and the anchor bolt spreadsheet when bolts are in scope.
Pre-pour 3D scanning in Houston and nationwide — how it is priced
Houston-metro pours are scanned from our Sugar Land, Texas headquarters, often by the same technician performing the special inspection. Projects elsewhere are staffed through the nearest of our 27 regional hubs on a per-pour or program basis. Pricing is per placement area for one-off pours and per program for data center, industrial, and healthcare projects with dozens of placements; the quote states the capture time, the deliverable set, and the turnaround.

FAQ
Pre-Pour Rebar & Embed Scanning: questions buyers ask
What is a pre-pour scan and what does it capture?
A handheld 3D scan of the reinforcing, embeds, anchor bolts, sleeves, conduit, and post-tension layout taken after the inspector's walk and before placement. It records geometry and color together, so the model can be measured later for bar spacing, cover, embed location, and bolt position.
How accurate is 3D scanning for rebar spacing and cover?
The scanner is rated at 3D point accuracy up to 0.1 mm; over a slab bay the achieved accuracy is a few millimeters once drift control is applied, and the report states what was achieved. That is well inside the ACI 117 placing tolerances the overlay checks against, which are measured in fractions of an inch.
Does the scan replace the special inspector?
No. IBC Chapter 17 requires inspection of reinforcing steel by a special inspector, and the inspector still verifies size, grade, placement, and condition. The scan is the measured record the inspector signs against and the engineer of record can review remotely.
What happens if the scan finds something out of tolerance?
You hear about it before the pour, not after. The overlay is reviewed on site, the superintendent gets the specific locations, the fix is made, and we rescan the corrected area so the record shows the as-placed condition.
Can you scan post-tension slabs before the pour?
Yes. Tendon profile, chair heights, anchorages, and the sleeves and conduit that cross the tendons are all captured. That record is what the next trade uses to avoid a tendon when coring.
Do I still need GPR before coring if I have a pre-pour scan?
Usually not where the scan covers the core location, because the scan shows the actual bars and embeds. Where the scan does not cover an area, or the slab was poured without one, GPR is the right call and we schedule it.
Is an as-installed anchor bolt survey required before steel is set?
The AISC Code of Standard Practice expects anchor rods to be checked against the setting plan before erection and puts the responsibility on the owner's designated representative. A scanned pattern report, pre- and post-pour, is the clean way to satisfy that and hand the erector verified coordinates.
How fast is the turnaround on a pre-pour scan?
Capture fits inside the pre-pour window. The as-built record is delivered the same day and the deviation overlay the next business day, with a same-day rush when the pour is the following morning.
